Dynamic Therapeutic Formulary

The Express Scripts Canada Dynamic Therapeutic Formulary (DTF) is a two-tiered formulary that combines the benefits of a managed formulary with the flexibility of a traditional drug plan. The Express Scripts Canada Dynamic Therapeutic Formulary is a defined list of drugs that incorporates a dynamic process through which drugs are reviewed on a monthly basis, and assessed as to their therapeutic effectiveness as the most clinically effective and affordable alternatives for patients.

Under the formulary, drugs listed on the DTF (tier one) are offered at a higher reimbursement level than other covered prescription medications. As new drug information becomes available, drugs will be added or removed from the DTF.

The ESI Dynamic Therapeutic Formulary is designed to:

  • Provide clinically effective and affordable drug coverage for plan members while not  eliminating coverage for the majority of drugs
  • Educate members about the cost of drugs and encourage them to be involved in choosing more cost-effective drugs

The second tier is a standard drug plan, which may be chosen by the plan sponsor and customized to include or exclude additional therapeutic categories of drugs, features and/or options (such as co-insurance levels).
